My work for Crime Confidential was something of a departure for me. Not only did it allow me to explore a new genre - detective fiction - but for the first time I wasn’t working in somebody else’s fictional universe with somebody else’s characters. Before the magazine’s untimely cancellation, I wrote four stories starring Mrs Lucinda Batt, an interfering amateur sleuth who solved crimes in the seaside resort town of Clayborough-on-Sea during the 1960s. Her adventures were short, and focused on providing an intriguing mystery for readers to unravel. I was also asked to keep them light-hearted, as a contrast to the real-life crimes documented elsewhere in Crime Confidential. In this example, from issue #3, Mrs Batt has to work out how a collection of antique clocks might be connected to a murder attempt...
